A Half-Day at Chimney Rock From Your Motorcoach

Chimney Rock State Park is one of North Carolina’s most-loved attractions, and from a Lake Lure base it is an easy half-day with time left for the lake. Here is a relaxed plan that lets you see the highlights without rushing — and without moving the coach.

Getting there

From Apple Valley Farm and the north shore of Lake Lure, the park entrance is just a short drive away. Go early if you can: parking and the trails are quieter in the morning, and the light on the gorge is beautiful. Pack water, a light layer, and good shoes.

The rock and the views

The park’s namesake is the 315-foot granite monolith, Chimney Rock, which delivers 75-mile views across Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. An elevator inside the mountain makes the summit accessible, or you can take the stairs and trails if you want to stretch your legs. Either way, the panorama from the top is the kind of view you plan a whole trip around.

The trail to Hickory Nut Falls

Don’t miss the trail to Hickory Nut Falls, a 404-foot waterfall made famous as a backdrop in The Last of the Mohicans. The walk is moderate and well worth it — standing at the base of a waterfall that tall is a highlight of any Blue Ridge visit.

Back at the coach by lunch

Because it is so close, you can be back at your lot for lunch by your own waterfall, then spend the afternoon on the lake or relaxing on the deck. That is the beauty of basing your coach here — big attractions, short drives, and plenty of downtime.

Tips for the visit

Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and check the park’s hours before you go. Mornings are cooler and less crowded. And if you are traveling in fall, expect more visitors during peak foliage — arriving early makes a real difference.
