Top Waterfall Hikes Near Lake Lure

Western North Carolina is waterfall country, and several of the best are a short drive from your coach in Lake Lure. Whether you want a quick, easy walk or a longer trek, here is how to chase waterfalls from your home base — starting with one you do not even have to leave to enjoy.
Start with the one at home
Our site at Apple Valley Farm has its own private 20-foot waterfall and stonework — so you can ease into the day with the sound of falling water right outside the coach, coffee in hand, before heading out to the bigger ones.
Hickory Nut Falls at Chimney Rock
The headliner is Hickory Nut Falls in Chimney Rock State Park — a 404-foot waterfall reached by a moderate trail, and one of the tallest in the eastern United States. It is famous as a backdrop in The Last of the Mohicans, and standing at its base is a genuine highlight. Because the park is only a short drive from Lake Lure, it is an easy half-day.
Exploring the broader area
Beyond Chimney Rock, the greater Blue Ridge region around Lake Lure and Hendersonville is full of cascades, with options for every ability level — from short, family-friendly walks to longer hikes. It is worth planning a dedicated waterfall day to string a few together, checking current trail conditions and access before you go.
Tips for waterfall hiking
Wear shoes with good traction — rocks near waterfalls are slick. Stay on marked trails and behind barriers; waterfalls are beautiful but the rocks around them are genuinely dangerous when wet. Bring water, start early to beat crowds and afternoon heat, and check trail status, especially after storms.
